    Building Your First Trad Rack

    Cams

Building Your First Trad Rack For Climbing In Australia

    QUICK SUMMARY

    • Your first trad rack includes the basics: nuts, cams, quickdraws, extendable draws, a nut tool, slings, and anchor materials.
    • A set of nuts and a single rack of cams is enough for many beginner trad routes.
    • Expand your rack gradually. A double rack of cams, offset nuts, micro-cams, and larger cams aren't essential when starting out.
    • Borrow gear where possible. Avoid buying sizes you don't use regularly too early.
    • The best trad rack has the right gear for what you like to climb and your experience level.

What Gear Do I Need To Start Trad Climbing in Australia?

To start trad (traditional) climbing in Australia, you’ll need your personal climbing gear plus a basic trad rack. A basic trad rack often includes a set of nuts, 6-7 cams (sizes 0.4-3), and about 8-10 quickdraws and alpine draws, as well as a nut tool for retrieving your gear.

In this article, we’ll explore a basic trad rack used by most climbers in Australia. A basic rack checklist includes:

    • A nut tool
    • A set of nuts (10-13 nuts) with a non-locking keylock carabiner
    • A single rack of Cams (6-7 cams) with a pack of coloured racking carabiners
    • 6 standard quickdraws
    • 4-6 extendable quickdraws
    • 2-3 extra slings (60cm or 120cm) with a small carabiner each
    • Anchor materials with 3 carabiners

    Supplementary, but not required.

    • A single rack of Hexes (5-7 hexes) will be better for climbs with less splitter crack placements, it is more applicable to climbs below grade 15. Owning a set is optional as many climbers prefer starting with cams.
    • A second rack (aka. double rack).
    • Offset nuts

It’s best to tailor your rack based on what is needed for each area. In general most beginner to intermediate climbs in Australia, a single trad rack is enough to tackle short and varied cracks found in places like the Blue Mountains, Grampians, and Frog Buttress. Longer routes greater than 25m, multi-pitches, and areas with wild exposure, such as Tasmania & Moonarie will require more cams. Areas such as Arapiles require more nuts and hexes, and Mt Buffalo requires more cams and micro-nuts.

    Trad Rack Components

How To Build Your First Trad Rack

When it comes to building your first traditional climbing rack (aka trad rack), there’s no single, definite way to build it. Every climber starts with a different mix of gear, shaped by the areas they climb in, the route styles they like, and the gear they pick up along the way. This guide breaks down the essentials of a first trad rack and provides advice around when you might want to have more of one thing over another. At the end of the day, the gear that makes up your first trad rack comes down to personal preference. The important thing is to start with enough gear to climb safely and confidently. Your rack will naturally evolve as your climbing does.

    Set Of Nuts

    THE NUT TOOL

The very first piece of equipment is a nut tool. It’s essential when seconding trad as it lets you retrieve gear from the wall. Mastering this tool will earn "booty" (nuts or cams left behind from other parties) to add to your first rack. Nut tools will vary, but the main decision at this stage is if you want a leash or no leash style. A leash helps you avoid dropping the tool when retrieving gear. No leash versions are lighter and less bulky.

    SET OF NUTS

Nuts are wedged into rock constrictions to provide protection on a climb. A well placed nut can be better than any textbook cam placement when it comes to catching big falls because there's no moving parts that can fail. Standard nuts have a consistent shape, where one end is smaller than the other and fits into typical V-shaped constrictions. Choose a set that will cover a variety of sizes for your first rack.

A set ranges from 10 to 13 pieces from about 0.5cm to 3cm in width. Suitable nuts for beginners include:

Wild Country Anodised Rock Set 1-10 Black Diamond Stopper Set 4-13

    Wild Country
    Anodised Rock Set 1-10

    Black Diamond
    Stopper Set 4-13

Offset nuts can be added later to your rack. These enable more opportunities for protecting awkward constrictions, mostly found with sea cliffs and granite. For beginners, I don't recommend the budget option (Wild Country Classic Rock Set 1-10) because the colour-coding helps differentiate sizes quickly when you’re learning.

    OVAL KEYLOCK CARABINER

An oval non-locking carabiner is best for organising nuts for its symmetry and snag-free experience. The keylock nose is smooth and doesn’t have a notch where the gate connects. A notch is problematic for racking nuts because they can easily catch and cause you to drop pieces when you’re placing the gear. I personally like an oval carabiner, but other people use D-shaped carabiners. Examples include:

C.A.M.P. Oval XL Clip Gate Trango Tiny Solid Straight Gate Mad Rock Oval Tech Straight Gate Black Diamond Oval Keylock Carabiner

    Oval XL Clip Gate

    Trango

    Mad Rock
    Oval Tech Straight Gate

Pro Tip: Buy two carabiners to separate your smaller solid nuts from the larger, hollow nuts. This will help you find the gear you need quicker.

    Single Rack Of Cams

SINGLE RACK OF CAMS - FRIENDS & CAMALOTS

Cams or Friends are one of the most popular forms of trad protection thanks to how quick and intuitive they are to place. Pulling back the trigger retracts the lobes, allowing the cam to slide into a crack and expand into place.

For Australia, we recommend starting with only a single rack of cams covering the main sizes from 0.4 to #3. Most people will choose between Wild Country Friends or Black Diamond Camalots as their starting rack at Climbing Anchors.

    Wild Country Friend Set 2026 - Set of 6 (Size: 0.4, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 2, 3) Black Diamond C4 - Set of 6

    Wild Country
    Friend Set 2026 - Set of 6

    Black Diamond
    C4 - Set of 6

The reasons for this choice is because these cams offer:

    • Durable, standard-sized lobes
    • Extendable slings helps reduce walking
    • Thumbloops make placing easier
    • Sets are priced well
    • Has matching racking carabiner colours
    • Commonly used by other climbers, making it easier to borrow
    • Repairable trigger wires (Friends only)

Other options on the market, but are less likely to be chosen as a first rack:

    • Totem cams - great holding power, can be used in non-standard placements and aid. Not recommended as a first set because they require more care due to their softer, non-anodised lobes and single axle, which have a higher chance of breaking during falls, especially if not placed well. Often chosen as a second rack instead.
    • DMM Dragons - Has many of the features listed above of what you’d want in your first rack, but is less popular due to lack of thumbloop.
    • Metolius Ultralight Master Cam - great for the printed camming range on the lobes, fits in cracks other standard-lobe sized cams don’t, uncommon to see other climbers with this if you wanted to test them beforehand. Less likely a first set choice, but may be bought later to fill certain gaps in your range.

Don't forget to grab matching racking carabiners for your cams. The colours should correspond to each cam. These are the most common choices:

    BEGINNER TRAD CLIMBER PITFALLS

    1) Over Dependence On Cams

One lesson that beginner trad climbers should learn early is not to get into a habit of overly depending on cams. Cams are so easy to place that you can overlook good nut placements during the learning stage. If you only carry a single rack of cams, you’ll get more practice with nut placements. Micro-cam sizes can be easily supplemented by nuts.

    2) Not Utilising Borrowed Gear

Borrow gear if a route obviously requires multiples of the same cam. It's easy to convince yourself to buy more cams, but after that one climb they may sit on your rack unused. Super large cam sizes such as #4, #5 & #6 are expensive and can almost always be borrowed from friends. If you want to buy more cams, prioritise getting a second cam in the sizes you’re in need of most, such as the middle range: 0.75, #1, #2 and #3.

    Set Of Hexes

    SET OF HEXES (OPTIONAL)

Before the cam was invented, climbers used chocks, wedges and hexes in cracks. As cam technology and prices improved, the hexes became more widely known as the poor man’s cam. However, I would like to argue that hexes still have their place in climbing today. If you’re climbing in Arapiles or the Blue Mountains, where the grades are below 15 you’ll need hexes.

On easier climbs, you’ll find more placements that hexes can fit than cams. The hexes we have are:

Wild Country Rockcentric Set 5-9 Black Diamond Wired Hexentric Set 4-10

    Wild Country
    Rockcentric Set 5-9

    Black Diamond
    Wired Hexentric Set 4-10

For a beginner, I would recommend the Wild Country Rockcentric with the slings because they’re less likely to move after being placed. The wired Black Diamond Hexcentrics perform better in smaller sizes where offset nuts do not fit.

    Trad Quickdraws

    QUICKDRAWS FOR TRAD

There are two kinds of quickdraws for trad: short, light quickdraws and extendable quickdraws. If you've come from a sport climbing background, you can use your sport quickdraws if you don’t mind the weight.

    Lightweight Quickdraws

Choose 6 short, lightweight quickdraws featuring dyneema dogbones and wire-gate carabiners are the ideal choice for trad climbing due to weight savings. Options include:

Wild Country Wildwire Trad Quickdraws - Set of 6 Mammut Sender Wire Quickdraw - 17cm Wild Country Wildwire Quickdraw 2025 Black Diamond HotWire Quickdraw

    Extendable Quickdraws

Extendable quickdraws (aka alpine draws) help manage rope drag on long, wandering routes. They are a combination of wire-gate carabiners and slings, which you can build yourself or purchase pre-made ones.

C.A.M.P. Mach Express Dyneema Quickdraw Ocun Kestrel St-Sling 12mm Dyneema Quickdraw

    C.A.M.P.
    Mach Express Dyneema Quickdraw

    Ocun
    Kestrel St-Sling 12mm Dyneema Quickdraw

I personally like to build 4-6 extendable quickdraws. This is my set up choice:

C.A.M.P. Nano Carabiner (Colour: Titanium) C.A.M.P. Photon Wire Gate (Colour: Red) Mammut 8mm Contact Dyneema Slings
    Bolt-side Carabiner Rope-side Carabiner

    Sling

    C.A.M.P.
    Nano Carabiner

Small carabiner to save on weight. If you have big hands, choose a Photon instead.

    C.A.M.P.
    Photon Wire Gate

Light, full-sized carabiner to make clipping the rope easier with one hand.

    Mammut
    8mm Contact Dyneema Slings
     - 120cm

This sling has non-catch bar tack, which makes extending and shortening the draw smoother.

Carabiner combinations for mixed routes. If you're intending to climb mixed routes, then you'll need some solid gate carabiners at the bolt end of the quickdraw for clipping into bolt plates. Either use your sport solid gate quickdraws on these routes, or purchase hybrid short draws instead of only wire quickdraws. Your extendable quickdraws can remain only wire gate carabiners to save on weight.

    Anchor Materials

    ANCHORS & EXTENSION MATERIALS

The most common types of anchors you'll come across when trad climbing are double bolt anchors, three piece trad anchors, and tree anchors. Sometimes it's hard to know what anchor you’ll build until you get to the anchor point.

    ANCHORS

As a new trad leader, it’s best to keep your anchor materials versatile and cheap enough that you’re willing to part ways with it in a sticky situation. My preference is 6-7 metres of 7mm accessory cord (6mm diameter is also an option). It can be rigged in numerous ways to create equalised anchors on trad pieces, trees, rocks, and bolts. You’ll also need three locking carabiners for your anchor set up.

I don't recommend investing in a 240cm sling when starting out. Though you save on weight and bulk, you’re going to find it expensive to replace if used when bailing on a climb or accidentally forgotten on a tree anchor.

    SLINGS

Carry about 2 extra slings in a 60cm, 80cm or 120cm length slung over your shoulder. The choice of length depends on which size slings over your shoulder best without getting in your way. Each sling will have a single small wire-gate carabiner on it, like a C.A.M.P. Nano 22.

You can use these slings in many ways from building anchors, extending protection pieces and slinging strange features (like chickenheads) for protection.

Finally, there are many nauces when it comes to building a trad rack that can't easily be explained in an article. If you've ever got questions specific to your sitaution, get in touch with us and we'll help you build a rack that's best suited for your climbing area, experience level and budget.

    Enjoy!
