Choosing The Right Rock Climbing Helmet

In rock climbing, the risks aren’t always the same: rock type, route style, and fall potential can change dramatically from one climb to another. Choosing the right climbing helmet isn’t just about fit. It’s about understanding the impact risks you’ll face outdoors, including:

Falling rock or gear from above
Hitting your head against the wall during a fall
Bumping into rock overhangs

This guide goes further than most: we explain the different types of climbing helmets, how each one protects you, and how to choose the right one so you can climb smarter and safer outside.

Different Kinds Of Helmet Types

Climbing Helmet Types

While all certified helmets meet safety standards for rock climbing and mountaineering, their materials, construction, and design change how they perform in different impact scenarios. There are three types: hardshell, in mould, and hybrid.

Hardshell Helmets

Hardshell climbing helmets are known for their strong, rigid outer layer made from ABS plastic that offers excellent durability at an affordable price. These helmets are designed to be durable against user damage, such as scratches, dents, pressure and punctures, which makes them a popular choice for climbers who might handle their helmet carelessly.

A hardshell helmet can come with two forms of impact absorption:

Half crown coverage is where the inner foam protects only the crown or top half of the head. Their main purpose is to protect against falling objects from above (i.e. rocks and gear), which are some of the most common hazards when outdoor rock climbing. While this type of hardshell is excellent for deflecting falling objects from above, it typically offers less side-impact protection than other helmet types.

This style of helmet is suitable for climbers who are top-rope climbing and belaying, where the risk comes from objects falling from above. It’s less suitable for climbers who are leading due to the lack of protection from impact on the sides and back.

All round coverage is where the inner foam liner is designed to protect the top, sides and lower back of the head. It provides impact protection from falling objects, as well as protection from hitting your head during a fall when lead climbing.

This type of helmet is for beginner climbers transitioning from top-rope to lead climbing, or climbers who want an affordable and care-free helmet. Initially they are slightly pricier than the half crown option, but will remain useful for longer as your climbing experience progresses.

There are some other trade-offs to consider when choosing a hardshell. These include:

Heavier and bulkier fit. Some people don’t like the feeling of a heavy, bulky helmet when climbing. If this is you, we would recommend choosing an in-mould or hybrid one for comfort.
Reduced ventilation. Hardshells are typically less breathable in hot weather, making them feel sweaty and uncomfortable when climbing in summer. Though this has improved in models like the C.A.M.P. Ikon.
Difficult to inspect foam for damage. A helmet needs to be replaced once the foam becomes damaged, or experiences a major impact (see How Protection Layers Work). This can be difficult to judge behind the hard exterior of the helmet.

If any of these trade-offs do not align with your preferences, we do recommend trying a different type of helmet. Your comfort is just as important because it affects the likelihood of you wearing your helmet when you’re at the crag (not just when you’re on the wall).

In Mould (Softshell) Helmets

In Mould helmets are lightweight and comfortable with excellent vertical and lateral impact protection, making them a versatile choice for climbers who regularly go sport climbing, trad climbing, multipitching, mountaineering and ice climbing.

Despite the cost and fragility of these helmets, most climbers prefer this type of helmet because the protection and comfort it provides is far superior to hardshell helmets. During a fall or accident, the helmet is designed to break on impact, quickly dispersing the impact force energy and reducing injury to your head, brain and neck. It may seem like these helmets explode, but that’s the point.

In-mould helmets provide all-round protection in various weights and designs to suit different needs.

Ultra lightweight helmets weigh less than 200grams. Designed for mountaineering, however more commonly used in hard sport & trad climbing where every gram matters. Due to their partial polycarbonate shell and exposed inner foam, these helmets are the most fragile. However, they remain popular for their comfort among those who dislike wearing helmets.

High impact helmets are best for climbers who may end up in a situation where they’ll take a big fall on sport or trad climbs, as well as crags that might be chossy. These helmets excel at protecting a single hard impact as they are made of only EPS foam (see How Protection Layers Work). They’re a bit more resistant to accidental breakage and scratches due to a full polycarbonate shell, but still need to be treated with care.

There are many benefits to consider:

Better level of protection, most are designed to cover the lower back of the head too.
Lighter and ventilated makes them more comfortable to wear for longer period of time.
Easier to notice damage and assess when a helmet requires replacement.

The main downside is that they’re fragile and expensive to replace when broken, but seriously what is your life worth? Most people will take extra care with these helmets, clipping them to the outside of their pack to prevent them from being accidentally punctured or broken in the bag.

Hybrid Helmets

Hybrid helmets combine the best of both worlds of hard shell and in mould. Though not as light as in mould, the partial ABS hard shell outers make them more resistant to cosmetic damage from transportation or small falling rocks.

Due to the exposed foam, many hybrid helmets are also designed to have an elastic foam (EPP - Expanded Polypropeylene) that offers better low-impact durability during lateral (sideways) impacts. The reason for this type of foam is its shape can slowly bounce back after a low impact force scenario, such as bumping into the wall on accident. These occurrences happen often when mountaineering, trad climbing, or for those who simply bump their head a lot might benefit from this type of foam helmet. The downside is that EPP is not as effective as EPS in dispersing force quickly, so often these helmets need to combine the two foam types.

Pros:

Mid-weight, still light but also more durable
Not as fragile, resisting punctures and accidental breakage better
A range of combinations and materials, with varying price points to suit different needs

Cons:

Heavier than in-mould.
Never “ultra light”.
Feels unbalanced or front heavy.
Similar price or more costly compared to in-mould helmets

Many premium in-mould and hybrid climbing helmets combine EPS and EPP to balance maximum protection with durability, providing coverage for both overhead and side impacts.

So when deciding on a helmet, think about where you'll climb most and how often you'll use it.

If you're climbing long, exposed routes, weight savings can be worth the price.
If you’re pushing grades and taking falls, then put some money into a helmet with high impact protection.
If you're only belaying friends at the gym or crag, a heavier or budget-friendly option may be all you need.

How The Protection Layers Work (Bonus Section)

Climbing helmets are designed to break on purpose. When a helmet breaks or deforms during a fall or impact, it’s actually doing its job:

Absorbing and reducing peak force to your skull, brain and neck
Spreading the impact energy over a larger surface area
Preventing rebound that may cause secondary impact

It’s important to know that every climbing helmet can only be used for a single impact only. Once it’s been damaged, it can’t protect you again in the same spot. Climbing helmets use a combination of different materials to keep your head safe. We'll explain the layers and materials in climbing helmets below.

OUTER LAYER - THE SHELL

The outer shell's purpose is to protect the inner foam. It helps the inner foam keep its shape, preventing cracking, denting, scratches and punctures from small drops and rough handling. On impact, it doesn’t absorb force, but rather disperses the force across a larger surface area for the inner foam layer to absorb.

An outer shell commonly is built from two types of materials:

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a tough plastic used in hardshell helmets. It’s heavy, but very durable against rough handling, punctures and dents.
Polycarbonate is a very thin, lightweight plastic used for in-mould helmets. The shell provides structure and keeps the helmet light without sacrificing performance. However, it’s not very resistant to punctures, dents or rough handling.

INNER LAYER - THE FOAM

The inner foam is used to absorb the impact and reduce the peak force as quickly as possible before it reaches your skull, brain and neck. There are two types of foam used in climbing helmet:

EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) is a rigid and fragile foam made from tiny air-filled beads fused in a closed-cell structure. To absorb high-impact shocks, the air-filled beads collapse on impact, dispersing and absorbing the force, and converting some of it into heat. When the foam takes impact, it is permanent and cannot absorb further impacts to the same spot. EPS is the most effective in absorbing impact quickly.
EPP (Expanded Polypropeylene) is a semi-flexible foam that offers better helmet durability against low impacts. Instead of collapsing, EPP compresses and then slowly bounces back to its original shape through elastic deformation. This makes the helmet reusable after taking a minor impact, such as bumping into a rock on the route or light dents from gear when packed. During a high impact, EPP will collapse permanently.

What is the best climbing helmet?

When it comes to choosing a climbing helmet, you need to shop within your budget and what you value in a helmet. The “best” ultralight climbing helmet on the market might not be for you simply because it's expensive and fragile, which means more frequent replacements. Start by asking yourself:

What is your budget?
Are you top roping or lead climbing?
Does your head sweat a lot?
Do you want it to be as light as possible?
Do you like ease of adjustment?

What's the difference between hardshell, in-mould and hybrid helmets?

Hardshell helmets have a rigid ABS outer shell and a foam liner making them durable and affordable, but heavier and less breathable. In-mould helmets bond the foam directly to a thin polycarbonate shell, making them lighter and more comfortable, but more fragile and pricier. Hybrid helmets sit in between: a partial hardshell outer over in-mould-style foam, trading a little weight for better durability.

Is a lighter helmet always better?

Not necessarily. Lighter usually means more fragile and more expensive to replace, since ultralight helmets rely on a thin shell and exposed foam. If you're mostly top-roping or belaying at the crag, a heavier hardshell is often the more practical, longer-lasting choice.

Weight matters most if you're multi-pitching or mountaineering, where there's a significant advantage to save on weight. However, this is entirely situational. If you're mountaineering or multi-pitching in areas where it's chossy and there's higher chance of small rocks dislodging from wind, a hardshell helmet might be the better choice.

Can I use a bike helmet as a climbing helmet? Vice versa.

Climbing helmets are built to protect against falling objects from above, with top and side coverage. Bike helmets are designed for impacts with hard, flat surfaces, so they focus more on front and rear protection. The two aren't interchangeable. Use the right helmet for the right activity.

Are ponytail-compatible helmets different from standard ones, or just shaped differently at the back?

It's mainly a shape difference in the rear cradle system, with a cutout or gap so a ponytail or bun doesn't get squashed or change how the helmet should fit. Protection layers should be the same between the non-ponytail and ponytail versions.

Why do professional climbers not wear helmets?

Some climbers skip them on well-bolted sport routes where the risk of falling rock is low, and some find helmets "uncool" or uncomfortable. But professional climbers do wear helmets, just not always in the photos that end up on social media.

The choice to wear a helmet is completely yours, and yours alone. We will always recommend wearing a helmet whether you're a beginner or a pro, because helmets save lives. Not everything is within your control, such as a sudden rockfall or a fall that inverts you.

Talk to anyone who's been climbing long enough and they'll tell you to wear a helmet.

I personally find my climbing helmet uncomfortable, what should I do?

If you find your climbing helmet uncomfortable because it's too heavy, too sweaty, or blocking your view, you've probably got a helmet that isn't right for you. If it's too heavy, especially when looking around, try a lighter helmet, or even an ultralight one that feels like you're barely wearing anything.

Breathability affects comfort too. If you're sweating up a storm, try one with better ventilation. And if your helmet flops around on your head, that's simply the wrong size or fit.

Does every climbing helmet really need replacing after just one impact, even a small one?

It depends on the foam and how hard the impact was. EPS can be permanently damaged by any impact small or large when it shows compression or dents, which means replacing the helmet. EPP can bounce back from minor knocks without needing replacement. Either way, inspect your helmet after any impact or drop, and retire it if you have any doubts about its condition.

What helmets can I use for caving or canyoning?

People often use climbing helmets for caving and canyoning, however there are certain types we would recommend. Since caving and canyoning will often put your helmet through a lot of abuse, we recommend hardshell helmets. The best one would be the C.A.M.P. Titan as this helmet has replaceable padding and parts, which you'll definitely need as things break when squeezing through tunnels or get soiled in canyons.
