A properly fitted climbing helmet should sit low on your forehead, just above your eyebrows and remain secure when you shake your head without the chin strap attached. It should feel equally snug all around, without causing pressure points.
Every helmet has a slightly different shape to match different head shapes. Some are narrower than others, some taller and some are shallower. If you’re trying on helmets in store, it’s easy to visualise and feel which helmet is sized correctly.
If you’re trying to purchase online, there’s only one measurement you’ll need to compare options: the diameter of your head.
Each helmet comes in two sizes. The size range will vary between each model, so it’s best to compare your options to see which sizes will fit you the best. For example:
|
|
C.A.M.P. |
Wild Country |
Black Diamond |
Petzl |
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Small / Medium |
53cm - 59cm | |||
| Medium / Large (Size 2) |
57cm - 63cm | 57cm - 62cm | 53cm - 61cm |
My head measures at 58cm. Based on that I can fit into both Small/Medium and Medium/Large of every helmet on this list. Since I am choosing online, I will play it safe and choose a size where 58cm sits closer to the middle of the range, elminating sizes where 58cm is at the cusp of the range. Out of the four options, if I were to choose only on size range itself, the Petzl Boreo has the best potential for fit as 58cm will sit closer to the middle of the range.
If I were in store, I would try on each of these options and proceed with whichever feel the most comfortable, fits snug but not too tight, and passes the fit tests below.
A brand new helmet may need slight adjustments to the straps to position it squarely on your head. It should not tilt too forward where your vision is obstructed, or backward exposing your forehead.
Most helmets have a rear dial or ratchet system for fine-tuning circumference, plus straps to adjust front-to-back position and chin strap length.
1. Adjust rear straps or dial to fit your head.
2. Adjust the side straps to sit under your ear lobes.
3. Clip buckle, then adjust the chin straps
4. Check all straps are flush and helmet is positioned correctly
Once you've got the helmet on, you can do these checks to ensure it fits correctly:
It's also worth doing a quick fit check every time you put the helmet on, not just the first time. Straps loosen, buckles get bumped, and a helmet that fit perfectly last session can work its way loose without you noticing.
