Climbing helmets lifespan is usually dictated by wear and damage rather than by time. That means after any accident or significant fall, your helmet has done its job and needs replacing. No debate there. The trickier calls are the ones where nothing dramatic has happened, but your helmet is starting to show its age.
Here's how to decide when you need to retire your helmet, what parts can be replaced, and how to regularly conduct the inspection.
Important: the information in this article is general in nature. Though the information references technical manuals, it's not a replacement to the technical manual specific to your model helmet. Always refer to the technical manual to understand how to safely use your product.
Climbing helmets should be retired if it fails inspection or reaches it's recommended lifespan (whichever come first). Retire your helmet if you notice any of the following:
That last point catches a lot of people out. Though most manufacturers have a recommended lifespan of 10 years, it's not always the case. Learn how to check for lifespan.
Did you know?
Paint and stickers may contain solvents and materials that, with time, can alter the physical properties of the helmet. Many manufactures share these precautions, and applying stickers can void any warranty claims. Before applying any of these, please refer to the technical booklet.
This is an example from Petzl:

Additional factors that may reduce the lifespan of a helmet is how it's stored and transported. A helmet should be stored in a cool, dry, ventilated place. Avoid exposing the helmet to UV, heat, humidity, chemicals, corrosive, solvents, fuels, battery acid or battery fumes.
Stuffing a helmet into a climbing bag can easily lead to breakage, dents and splits. It's best to transport your helmet in a way that will protect it from punctures caused by other climbing gear, such as:
Better yet... wear your helmet on your head when walking into a crag!

Giving your helmet an inspection is the important thing you can do to confirm it's still in safe condition. Get in the habit of checking your helmet before and during climbing, and do a proper once-over every 12 months. Ask yourself:
Also ask yourself:
Hardshell helmets can hide damage more easily than foam ones, so take your time and check every angle, not just what's obvious at a glance.
Keep a record of your helmet's first-use date and every inspection. If that history is missing or illegible, or you don't know the helmet's full background, retire it. It's not worth the risk.

Some faults don't mean the whole helmet is unsafe. They mean a component has worn out. Replace the part if you spot:
Padding is usually the first thing to wear out, which is why most helmets ship with a spare set. Some brands also sell replacement headband systems and straps, so check with the manufacturer before assuming a worn part means a new helmet.

Why have we left this section last? Because you should always conduct inspections first, not rely on an abritary date to retire your helmet. Most climbing manufacturers will state a helmet must be retired when it fails inspection or when it reaches it's maximum lifespan of 10 years after the date of manufacture (whichever comes first).
Always check the specific manufacture recommendations on lifespan in the technical product manual for your model helmet. As indicated below, Black Diamond recommends the helmet's maximmium lifespan is 10 years from the date of manufacture.

While C.A.M.P. states the lifetime of the product is 10 years from the date of first use and cannot exceed the 12th year from manufacturing (whichever comes first).

Next, find how to identify and read the Date of Manufacture in the product manual. Some certifications can appear to look like years, and are not the Date Of Manufacture. In this example, the Date Of Manufacture is straightforward:

C.A.M.P. uses a diagram to indicate where on the label to locate the Date Of Manufacture. In this example, Number 7 is where to locate the Batch Number and it's respective month and year of manufacture.

Finally, using the manual as a guide. Find the label on the helmet. As you can see this C.A.M.P. helmet was manufactured in December, 2025. It's currently August 2026, so it's now 8 months old and it will reach its lifespan in on 1 Dec 2037 (new, unused) or 10 years from first use, but cannot exceed 2037.

You can learn more about reading product labels here and common mistakes.
Finally, once a helmet is retired, destroy it completely so it can't end up back in circulation or be used as something “a non-climbing friend” can borrow. Accidents happen, and it’s absolutely not okay to provide retired safety gear to someone who wouldn’t know any better.
Your safety and the gear you own is your responsibility. No article can replace you doing a proper inspection, so make sure you're climbing with the safe, working gear that you can count on.
Stay safe and I'll see you on the rock!
