    Carabiners Guide

Choosing The Right Carabiner: A Climbers Guide

Carabiners are the unsung heroes of climbing—used for everything from building anchors to cracking open post-send beers.

Sure, you could get by with just one carabiner for every job. But if you're here, you're probably ready to learn which types of carabiners are best for specific tasks. This guide breaks down everything you need to know, including:

    • Carabiner Anatomy
    • Locking vs. Non-locking Gates
    • Common Shapes & Their Uses
    • Nose Types (Keylock vs. Notch)
    • Size, Weight & Materials
    • Strength Ratings & Certifications

    Carabiner Anatomy

    carabiner structure

While carabiners come in many different shapes and style, they all share five key parts. We'll refer to these components when explaining the differences between carabiners:

    • Spine: The backbone of the carabiner. It's the strongest part and takes the bulk of the force when loaded.
    • Gate: A spring-loaded mechanism that opens inwards. It's how you clip in ropes, devices or protection into the carabiner.
    • Nose: The tip where the gate locks shut.
    • Rope Basket: The wider curve at the top of the carabiner, designed to allow a rope to move freely and reduce rope drag and wear.
    • Runner End:  The narrower curve at the bottom, often used to attach slings or position dogbones. Its shape helps keep the carabiner oriented correctly.

    Locking vs. Non-locking Carabiners

At a glance, carabiners are often divided into two main types: locking and non-locking. Choosing between the two is one of the first steps when selecting the right carabiner for your setup.

    Non-locking Carabiners

Non-locking carabiners are lighter, faster to clip, and ideal for situations where speed and efficiency matter—like quickdraws or racking protection. These types of carabiners are not used when utmost security is essential. You can find non-locking carabiners in two types: solid gates and wire gates.

    Solid Gate Carabiner

    SOLID GATE

Made from a solid piece of aluminium or steel, these are common in sport quickdraws. Solid gates also work well when clipping bolt plates—especially when climbing on notorious “carrot bolts” found at Australian crags—since they’re less likely to wiggle free.

    Wire Gate Carabiner

    WIRE GATE

These use a loop of stainless steel wire instead of a solid bar. Wire gates are lighter, resist ice and dirt buildup, and have a lower chance of “gate flutter” (accidental opening due to vibration or rapid movement motion). They're a top pick for alpine draws and cams.

Why do non-locking carabiners come in Straight and Bent gates?

It's all about function and safety.

    • Straight gates are typically used on the bolt-end of a quickdraw. They're simple and easy to clip into fixed structure or gear loops.
    • Bent gates have a slight curve, which makes it easier to clip the rope—especially with one hand.

It's good practice to keep the bolt and rope sides separate. You don’t want the carabiner that’s been scraping against botls (metal) to also run your rope—that’s how sharp edges and rope damage happen.

    Locking Carabiners

Locking carabiners are designed to stay closed—even if they get bumped or jostled around. Unlike non-locking carabiners, locking versions have a mechanism on the gate (like a screw or twist barrel) that prevents accidental opening.

This makes them ideal for safety situations where you really don’t want the gate popping open, like:

    • Belaying or rappelling
    • Building anchors
    • Clipping into an anchor using your Personal Anchor System (PAS)
    • Top rope setups

There are different types of locks—screwgates, twist locks, triple-action, and even magnetic, dual gate or ball locks—but they all serve the same purpose: security. Let's take a look.

    Screw Lock Carabiner

    SCREW LOCK

The classic. Durable, affordable, and reliable. Twist the sleeve to lock or unlock. Just remember—always check it's locked. Many models now include a visual indicator to show whether the gate is locked. Super handy when taking a quick glance—but again, don't let them replace a physical inspection.

    Twist and Tri Locks Carabiner

    TWIST & TRI LOCKS

Spring-loaded and auto-locking, these carabiners are fast and convenient. Just twist to open (sometimes a twist/pull). They’re great for quick handling, but require regular more frequent checks and cleaning—especially to avoid jamming from dirt or sand.

Magnetic Gate Carabiners, Ball and Dual Gate Carabiners

    SPECIALITY LOCKING GATES

There are some clever designs out there that go beyond the traditional screw or twist lock:

    • Magnetic Locks: Use magnets to hold the gate shut. Fast and satisfying to use, but grit and metal particles (like ironstone dust) can block the closure. Frequent cleaning is 100% required.

    • Ball Locks: Push a small button or ball to open the gate. Smooth, but tricky with cold fingers or gloves.

    • Dual Gates: Two opposing gates—one opens inward, the other outward. It’s a passive locking system that takes a little getting used to but adds an extra layer of security.

Heads up: These types of carabiners are not always ideal for harsh conditions. Cold weather, ice buildup, or fine dirt can mess with their moving parts. Use them with care, and always keep them clean.

Choosing The Right Shape For Locking Carabiners

When it comes to locking carabiners, shape matters more than you might think. Different shapes are designed for specific tasks—some prioritize strength and versatility, others focus on smooth rope handling or symmetrical load.

If you're choosing a carabiner for belaying, top roping or building anchors, the shape will affect how it handles, manages rope, and wears. Here are the four most common shapes you’ll come across in locking carabiners—and what they’re best for.

    regular d shape carabiner

    D-SHAPED CARABINER

The classic workhorse. D-shapes are strong, light, and versatile. The asymmetrical design directs the load toward the spine—where the carabiner is strongest. These are great all-rounders for most climbing tasks.

Best for: General use, personal safety anchors & anchors

    Pros:

    • High strength-to-weight ratio
    • Durable and versatile
    • Good for everyday climbing
    offset d shape carabiner

    OFFSET D CARABINER

An improved version of the standard D-shape, and probably the most common shape available now. Offset Ds feature an exaggerated rope basket, allowing for a more compact carabiner with a wide gate opening. All without sacrificing any strength.

Best for: General use, personal safety anchors & anchors

    Pros:

    • Compact & lightweight
    • High strength-to-weight ratio
    • Easier to clip with wider gate opening
    pear shape or HMS carabiner

    PEAR (HMS) CARABINER

Best for belaying and rappelling. The wide rope basket allows room for multiple rope strands and smoother rope movement, while the rounded, more symmetrical rope basket helps reduce friction and wear.

Best for: Belaying, rappelling, munter hitch

    Pros:

    • Excellent for belay devices
    • Reduces rope wear
    • Versatile in rescue situations
    • Large gate opening
    oval shape carabiner

    OVAL CARABINER

Not as strong as the others, but super useful. Their symmetrical shape helps center loads in the middle axis of a carabiner—ideal for racking nuts, attaching pulleys, or building hauling systems. While the D-shape loads closer to the spine (thus their strength). They also shine in niche setups like carabiner-brake rappels or primitive slacklines.

Best for: Racking nuts, pulleys, hauling setups

    Pros:

    • Great for organising protection (i.e. nuts)
    • Load centers well with pulleys and webbing
    • Affordable and simple

    Need-to-Know Tip:

If you're just starting out, Offset D-shapes and HMS (Pear) carabiners will cover 90% of your needs. Add ovals and D-shape as your systems get more specific.

key lock vs non key lock carabiner

    Carabiner Nose Types

You might not think much about the nose of a carabiner—until it snags at the worst possible time. Nose design plays a big role in how smoothly a carabiner clips, unclips, and handles gear. There are three main styles to know:

    Non-Keylock carabiner

    NOTCHED

This is the basic design, where a small notch in the nose catches the gate to keep it closed when it's under load. It’s functional and common on budget-friendly carabiners. The downside is it's prone to snagging on things, such as nuts/stoppers or bolt plates.

    Keylock Carabiner

    KEYLOCK

The gate and nose connect smoothly, like a jigsaw piece—no notch to catch on anything. This is the gold standard for snag-free clipping and unclipping, especially when racking nuts, cleaning routes or personal anchor systems. Most commonly found with locking carabiners, and can be foun on wire gates like the Camp Dyon.

    HOODED

A clever workaround for wire gates. A small hood or shroud covers the notch to reduce snagging—giving you many of the benefits of a keylock carabiner in a wired design.

    Size, Weight & Materials

Even though individual carabiners are light, that weight adds up fast when you’re carrying a full rack or a dozen quickdraws. But it's not just about saving grams—size also affects handling. Smaller carabiners can be harder to clip or use with gloves, and may not fit belay devices.

So how do you choose the right size for your setup? Here’s the breakdown:

Full sized, small and mini carabiner

    FULL SIZE

These are your all-rounders—great for racking nuts, hexes, quickdraws, or anything you’ll be grabbing often. Bigger carabiners are easier to handle (especially with gloves or big hands) and typically have a wider gate opening. You can find full-sized carabiners that are super lightweight too, such as the C.A.M.P. Photon Wire at 29g.

    SMALL & MINI SIZES

Perfect when weight is the priority—like alpine climbing, trimming down your trad rack, or building lightweight quickdraws. Some mini carabiners are just as strong as full-sized ones but weigh as little as 22g (C.A.M.P. Nano 22).

Material & Weight: What Makes a Carabiner Light?

Most recreational climbing carabiners today are made from 7075-T6 aluminium alloy—a strong, light, and durable material that hits the sweet spot between performance and price. Weights range from 22–60g depending on design. You can also find steel carabiners for industrial, commercial and fixed gear applications, they’re heavier (200–300g each) but extremely durable—often rated up to 60kN.

When looking at climbing carabiners, the big weight differences often come down to design, not materials. The two key zones where weight can be cut without losing strength are the spine and rope basket. Manufacturers tweak these areas to achieve these designs:

    Round Carabiner

    Distinc I-beam Carabiner

    I-beam

Round Rope Basket l-beam Spine Carabiner

Round rope basket with I-beam Spine

    Niether I-beam or Round Carabiner

    Modified I-beam

Many carabiners feature variations of Round and I-beam design for weight saving, strength or handling purposes:

    • Round: A carabiner with a round cross-section has more material, causes less friction, handles rope better and wears down slower over time. These are ideal for friction-based tasks like belaying or rappelling.
    • I-Beam: A carabiner with a cross-section shaped like a capital “i” is lighter without reducing strength. Material is removed from the sides but kept strong where it counts. The harsh angles increases friction, so these types of carabiners are not ideal if a rope needs to pass smoothly over the rope basket. These tend to wear faster, but at the significant improvement of strength and weight saving.

    Strength & Certifications

At Climbing Anchors, every carabiner we stock is fully certified for climbing and mountaineering. That means no gimmicky keychain or bottle opener carabiners here—only gear you can trust with your life.

When buying a carabiner for rock climbing, always check for industry-standard certifications. Look for markings on the spine or confirm through the manufacturer’s website:

    • EN (European Norm): Indicates compliance with EU safety standards

    • UIAA (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation): Not all carabiners will have this additional certification.

If a carabiner doesn’t have these, don't use it for climbing—no matter how cool it looks.

    Strength and certification of Carabiner

What else should you know? Well, carabiners must meet a minimum strength requirement to be certified for a particiular use. Carabiners for rock climbing show a rating across three orientations:

Major axis and minor axis carabiner strength rating
    • Major Axis: the strongest orientation and where the load is designed to be carried.
    • Minor Axis: the strength of the carabiner if it rotates and becomes cross-loaded. It’s significantly weaker than the major axis and it’s best to avoid cross-loading, especially when belaying.
    • Gated Opened: the strength of a carabiner when the gate is opened and not latched to the nose.

The carabiner's strength is dictated by the "kN". One kN is roughly equal to 224.8 lb of force (101 kg). A carabiner loaded along the major axis with 23kN in strength can take about 5170.6 lb (2345.3 kg) of force. They're way stronger then you'll ever need them to be and if you don't believe me, then watch this video on how much force lead falls can generate.

    That's it!

No matter where your climbing takes you—whether it’s the gym, the crag, or alpine routes—choosing the right carabiner for the job makes a difference in both performance and safety. With the right knowledge, you can build a rack that’s lighter, more efficient, and tailored to the way you climb.

    See you on the rock.

    Julie Pon

I have been rock climbing for about seven years and it’s taken me to beautiful places all over Australia. I love adventuring into the outdoors, seeking big multi-pitches, splitter cracks and night climbing. My local is the Blue Mountains (NSW), while in the winter I’ll migrate to Frog Buttress (QLD). When the weather’s right, you can catch me at places like Point Perpendicular, Arapiles, Tassie, Buffalo and maybe the Warrumbungles.
