Climbing Anchors is proud to be partnering with TreadLightly, a nationwide recycling initiative supported by the Australian Sporting Goods Association (ASGA), aimed at reclaiming retired sporting footwear and diverting this waste from landfill.
As an outdoor retailer run by climbers and outdoor enthusiasts, we are conscious of our environmental footprint in our lives and how we conduct business. Partnering with this initiative provides avenues for responsible disposal of climbing shoes, helping make recycling old shoes convenient and financially accessible for customers and rental shoe accounts.
Climbing Anchors stores will serve as a recycling collection point for any climbing shoe that cannot be repaired. TreadLightly will deliver these shoes to an Australian recycling partner who will extract reusable components, such as rubber and textiles, to produce recycled anti-fatigue mats and flooring for retail stores, gyms, and playgrounds.
We are accepting climbing shoes at the end of their life, where they are no longer able to be resoled or used for climbing because the material doesn’t hold it’s shape. “I believe it’s important to point out that this recycling initiative is not a place to dump unwanted, ill-fitting shoes that could be donated, reused or resoled,” says Leo, Partnerships & Community Officer at Climbing Anchors. We want to reduce the environmental footprint as a community, which means finding ways to ensure shoes are fully utilised before retiring. You can also donate unwanted shoes to your local climbing clubs and organisations.
You can drop off retired shoes at our TreadLightly shoe collection boxes in our Alexandria (NSW) and Fitzroy (VIC) stores. Climbing Anchors will cover the cost for each shoe recycled, as well the cost to recycle our gym rental shoes as part of our wholesale service.

Thank you for your support,
