Skin Care For Climbing

What’s the Best Skin Care Routine for Climbers?

Each skin care routine should be tailored to your specific needs. The most basic after-climbing care routine should include:

  1. Clean and dry your hands after climbing to remove chalk and grime.
  2. Use skin files to level down any calluses or loose, split skin (if needed).
  3. Apply an overnight hand cream or balm to repair minor tears, soothe soreness and hydrate skin.
  4. Repeat every night, especially after climbing days.

If you want to moisturise throughout the day or before climbing, choose products made for climbers that absorb quickly and aren’t greasy. Your overnight repair cream should feel thick and hydrating, as you wont be touching anything and this provides the best repair.

How to Heal Open Wounds or Torn Skin from Climbing?

Skin tears are common, but you can speed up recovery with the right products. First, clean the wound. Then apply a skin repair salve that creates a barrier and nourishes healing. Avoid re-opening wounds by using tape or reducing volume on your next climbing day. Hydration also matters: drink water and moisturise consistently. Minor skin damage usually heals in 1–3 days with proper care. Deep flappers or tears may take 5–7 days.

What balm is best for climbers?

Standard moisturisers from chemists can feel greasy. If you're looking for climbing-specific, fast-absorbing, and non-greasy formulas that you can apply any time of the day, check out Rhino Repair or ClimbSkin. These are formulated for hydrating any damaged, dry or cracked climbing skin. You can apply it at least 30 mins before climbing.

While overnight balms will offer the best skin regeneration as they are packed with essential oils. Balms such as Reset Hand Balm, KletterRetter Vegan Skin Disk, Rhino Split+ Hyaluronic Acid Cream and more are all designed to be deeply nourishing.

Can I climb with split or cracked skin?

If it’s minor, taping can help prevent it from further splitting. For deeper tears, let your skin heal fully to avoid infection or worsening damage. If you know that you're prone to splitting your skin, make sure you moisturise more frequently throughout the day and use less chalk. Avoid liquid chalk entirely.
