Performance Climbing Shoes

Performance climbing shoes are a step up from All Round models, offering greater sensitivity, precision and control for advanced techniques and technical climbing.

What Makes a Shoe “Performance”?

Performance shoes are often downturned with an asymmetric shape that puts more power through your toe. They’re designed for more advanced moves like:

  • Precise edging on small footholds
  • Smearing on slabby terrain (with softer models)
  • Toe hooking on volumes or roof holds
  • Heel hooking on overhangs

They come in varying stiffness and fits, depending on your climbing style. Similarly, Aggressive Performance are typically more downturned and asymmetric compared to the Performance shoes.

How to Choose Between Soft and Stiff Shoes

Soft shoes are great for indoor bouldering, volumes and slabs. They provide better feedback and flexibility. Stiff shoes offer support and control for edging on outdoor sport routes or trad. Many intermediate climbers benefit from owning two pairs: one soft, one stiff.

Fit Tips for Performance Shoes

A new pair of Performance shoes will fit tighter than beginner shoes to account for the stretch. We fit them tighter than normal so that the heel remains snug and doesn't lift during heel hooks, after the shoe has broken in. In Performance shoes, most brands will offer a high volume and low volume fit to minimise as much dead space and get as close to a sock like fit.

Material is another consideration as this affects stretch. As a general guide, leather will typically stretch on average a full size. Synthetic shoes, including Vegan climbing shoes, will stretch about half a size.
