Portable Hangboards

Are portable hangboards worth it?

Yes. Portable hangboards offer serious value, especially if you’re tight on space or budget. If you're short on space, travel frequently, warming up at the crag, or want to keep up training outside of the climbing gym, a portable hangboard is one of the most versatile climbing tools you can own. These compact devices let you maintain and build finger strength through a variety of exercises—even without mounting them. Whether you're doing weighted lifts, resistance band pulls, or no-hang routines, these tools are lightweight, easy to pack, and highly effective.

Where can I hang a portable hangboard?

The best part? You might not need to. Portable hangboards are often designed for use without needing to be mounted or hung. Use them with a footplate, attach them to a resistance band, or try weighted no-hang training. They’re versatile tools built for convenience and strength gains.

What’s the difference between portable and traditional hangboarding?

Traditional hangboarding involves hanging statically from fixed holds and often focus on yielding isometric exercises (hanging statically on a fixed grip). It's more efficient and effective in not only training the fingers, but also the arms and shoulders. It puts the forearms and fingers in a grip position that resembles climbing more closely. If you have the space and ability to mount, choose a traditional hangboard.

Portable training tools, such as lifting egdes, are becoming more popular because they have the added benefit of training overcoming isometrics - pulling into holds - which is great for crag warm ups and trains finger strength in a different way but has the same effect in building strength. It also allows isolating each hand, ensuring a more balanced gain in strength and using a dynamometer to measure your effort. Many climbers use a mix of both.

Can I use portable hangboards for injury rehab?

Yes, after consulting a physio or coach first if it is appropriate. Portable setups are ideal for light, controlled load rehab exercises and can be useful for easing back into climbing or building back finger strength gradually.
