Climbing Carabiners

What Do Climbers Use Carabiners For?

Carabiners are "connectors" in climbing and used in almost every climbing scenario to attach ropes, belay devices, safety devices, and protection gear. A climbing carabiner is designed to handle high forces and ensure safety when clipping into bolts, harnesses, and anchors. C.A.M.P. carabiners, Petzl carabiners, and Black Diamond carabiners are some of the popular brands that we sell, but there are many more that essentially do the same thing.

What Are the Different Types of Carabiners?

We categorise our carabiners under several types, each with a specific purpose. Some of the top categories include:

  • Non-Locking Carabiners: Lightweight and quick to clip, these are often used for quickdraws and hanging gear. In this category includes solid gate, bent gate and wire gate carabiners.
  • Locking Carabiners: These feature screw or auto-locking gates for added security. Commonly used with belay devices, when building anchors, or when connecting your safety anchor.
  • Auto-Locking Carabiners: Provide extra safety with an auto-locking mechanism, great for people who may forget to lock up their carabiners. There are many different types, each with pros and cons for when to use.
  • Belay carabiners: Are locking carabiners with a "belay keeper" mechanism to keep the carabiner oriented in the correct position when belaying.
  • Steel Carabiners: Located in locking carabiners, steel carabiners are heavier but extremely durable, often used in long-term rigging or top-rope setups.

There is much more to learn about different carabiner shapes and ideal use, visit our carabiner guide if you want to learn more.

Why Do Some Carabiners Say "Not for Climbing"?

Not every carabiner is made for climbing. Some are designed for keychains, hammocks, and non-climbing use and will be labelled "Not for climbing". Additionally, be cautious when buying from unknown sources because carabiners must be strict manufacturing and safety standards to be ceritified with a EN12275 and/or UIAA121, which indicates it can be used when climbing and mountaineering. Always check the certification before use and buy from trusted brands.
