Replacing a harness happens more often than you think. A harness can be retired after a significant fall, visible damage, or simply from exceeding its recommended lifespan based on the frequency of use.
This article looks at how frequently you should retire and replace your climbing harness, as well as how to conduct your own harness inspections. And if in doubt, it's always better to replace your harness than to question its reliability.
Important: the information in this article is general in nature. Though the information references technical manuals, it's not a replacement to the technical manual specific to your model harness. Always refer to the technical manual to understand how to safely use your product.
A harness should be retired if any of the following apply:
Learn about how each of these affects your harness lifespan to help you determine when you should retire a harness below.
Most climbers replace their harness every 1 to 5 years, but the right time for you depends entirely on how often you climb.
How often you use a harness determines when it needs replacing, assuming that you've also properly stored, transported, and used in normal climbing activities. Heavy use, poor storage or hard falls will shorten all of the timeframes below (see storage, fall and environment factors further down).
Always check your harness own technical manual for its manufacturer’s recommendations, but as a general guide, most brands follow something close to this:
| Frequency Of Use | Approximate Durability |
|---|---|
| Almost daily | 6 months |
| Every week | Up to 1 year |
| Several times a month | Up to 3 years |
| Once a month | Up to 5 years |
| Once or twice a year | Up to 7 years |
| Never used, stored properly | Up to 10 years from date of manufacture (varies by brand — check your manual). |
These figures in the table indicate when your harness needs to be replaced from the day you first use the harness, subject to other factors including its maximum working lifespan from its manufacture date. If you're due for a replacement, go grab yourself a new harness!
To determine the lifespan of an unused harness, always check the product manual guidelines to understand how it's determined as this is different between brands. Learn how to identify Date of Manufacture.
Sometimes a harness is used a lot, then stored away for long periods of time until it’s used again. If you’re figuring out if a harness in storage has exceeded its potential working lifespan, you can average it out like this:

Heat, UV, humidity, and chemicals all shorten the lifespan of a harness, so how you transport and store it between climbs matters as much as how frequently you use it. It’s important to take proper care of your harness to get the most out of its intended lifespan.
Not only do the environmental conditions from storage, but the conditions when used outdoors may accelerate wear, such as:
If you climb near sea water or the coast, wash and fully dry the harness after every outdoor session.
A hard catch or significant fall can weaken a harness even without visible damage, the same way a rope absorbs impact over its lifetime.
If you experience an intense fall and suspect that your harness may have been compromised, it is important to retire it immediately.
Visible signs of damage could include:
If you can’t see visible damage, but heard sitching popping or felt fabric tearing, it is possible that internal structural webbing is compromised. Retire it immediately.

Manufacturers recommend a full inspection every 12 months, but if you're climbing often, check monthly as they play a crucial role in safety.
The 10% rule: if more than roughly 10% of the harness shows wear, it's time to replace it. This is a judgement call rather than a precise measurement, so use the checklist below alongside your own instincts.
Is the webbing damaged, such as being worn, frayed, cut, fluffy, discoloured or brittle?
Are the belay or tie-in loops showing signs of damage, such as being worn, frayed, cut, discoloured, brittle or displaying a red thread indicator?
Is the stitching on the harness loose, frayed or showing cut threads?
Are the buckles rusted, deformed, have sharp edges or fractures?
Has the harness been improperly stored (exposed to sunlight, mould, or dampness)?
Has the harness been exposed to chemical products or corrosive substances (e.g. acids)?
Has the harness experienced an unusual event that may question its reliability?
Note: Not every reason to retire a harness is visible on the outside. A harness can reach the end of its recommended lifespan (counted from first use) and still look fine, which is why keeping track of its age and use matters as much as looking for damage.
Old harnesses can be repurposed to a certain extent. If the damage is minor and doesn't affect safety-critical parts, the harness can still earn its keep for top-roping, caving or canyoning.
Some harnesses can be repurposed for weighted hangboard training, providing the belay loop is intact and the leg loops get cut off so it can’t be climbed on again.
Once a harness is genuinely unfit for climbing or any other load-bearing use, destroy it completely. Cut it up so there's no chance of it being picked up and used again. Bin the textile webbing as general waste (or pop it into textile waste recycling) and recycle the metal buckles separately.
If you're time to replace your harness, go shop harnesses.
